How it Works

Older style swimming pool boilers are built with a horizontal heat exchanger for the pool water to flow through the flame is under the heat exchanger. As the flue gasses rise through the heat exchanger the pool water is heated, when lit these units work very well. But, when the pool is up to temperature, the pool water still goes through this heat exchanger.

Just like a car radiator. the system then starts to cool the water. This can be about 35% of the output of the heater. If filtering at night, this is even worse as the air temperature is much lower.

This is worst on outdoor pool boilers.

Pools with water to water in line heat exchangers feed from a domestic boiler will not benefit from this system as they are built differently.
